Scope and Contents
One photographic album created in July 1911 of 18 black and white photographs promoting land cultivation in Mobile and Baldwin counties in Alabama. Photographs are of different types of fruit that can grow in Alabama and examples of orchards in bloom. The photographs measure 3 3/8" x 5 1/2" and are adhesive mounted to 16 paper leaves.

The collection is of one photographic album of 145 photographs documenting the construction of United States Nitrate Plant Number 2 and the people of Muscle Shoals, Alabama during 1918 and 1919. In addition to the construction photographs there are many of the daily life and tent cities erected for workers in the area. The photographs are mounted, measuring 3½”x 3¾” to 3½” x 6”, and most are captioned beneath or on the verso.

The collection consists of twelve letters written by governess Lillian Graves from October 1885 through February 1886 as Graves cared for the Woodward family children in post-Civil War Alabama. Graves describes daily and holiday activities in late nineteenth-century Alabama, visiting the Woodward Iron Company mine, and makes extensive and problematic remarks about African Americans living in the Woodward home and in the area.

These depositions, which total fourteen pages, contain the August 1853 testimony of plantation owner Peyton L. Graves and his wife, Jane, regarding the case brought by their neighbor Elva Jenkins against her husband Edwin Jenkins, in Wilcox County, Alabama. The depositions include accounts of a violent dog attack against Elva, as well as her resentment over Edwin’s favoritism toward their slave Becky.
