Biographical / Historical

Alpha Epsilon Delta was founded at the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, on April 28, 1926. It is a non-profit, educational organization for the encouragement and recognition of scholastic excellence among premedical students, the stimulation of an appreciation of the importance of premedical education in the study of medicine, the promotion of cooperation and contacts between medical and premedical students, and educators in developing an effective program of premedical education, and to use its knowledge for the benefit of health organizations, charities, and the community. The original chapter of Alpha Epsilon Delta consisted of sixteen members: Walter S. Britt, James Cameron, Joesph Cooke, Charles S. Cotlin, Jay W. Cummins, James S. Dean, William H. DeRamus, Horace Franklin, Robert L. Garrard, Eugene H. Johnson, Thomas H. Lavender, Champ Lyons, Sidney A. Mitchell, Jack P. Montgomery, Clifford P. Powell, and Wyatt C. Simpson. In 2006, there were over 160 chapters of Alpha Epsilon Delta at accredited colleges and universities.
