Biographical / Historical

Construction began on United States Nitrite Plant Number 2 in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, between February and November of 1918. The plant was built as a war measure to produce ammonium nitrate, which was a key ingredient in high explosives used during World War I. Highways had to be built to allow for ease of access from Muscle Shoals to towns also along the Tennessee River, specifically Florence, Alabama, and Sheffield, Alabama. The construction of the plant brought an influx of workers to the area so an industrial town nearby was quickly built for accommodations. This included tent colonies of temporary housing for construction and plant workers and their families.
