Scope and Contents note From the Collection: Promissory note dated January 1, 1858, in which The University of Alabama agreed to pay $150 to W. J. Hays for the use of a slave named Paul for one year. The note is signed by George Benagh, a professor acting on behalf of the University.

Cooper's office in Richmond, Virginia, modifies an earlier order delineating medical officers' reasons for issuing medical furloughs for soldiers. Chief Surgeon A. S. Mason added a note that approved the message.
