Biographical / Historical
Samuel Cooper was apppointed adjutant and inspector general for the Confederate States of America by President Jefferson Davis in 1861. He was born in New Hackensack, New York, in 1798 to Mary Horton and Samuel Cooper. At fourteen years of age, he entered the United States Military Academy and graduated as a second lieutenant, light artillery, in 1815. In 1827, Cooper married Sarah Maria Mason, a descendant of a prominent Virginia family. After the Civil War, Cooper returned to his home in Cameron, Virginia, and was a farmer until his death in 1876.
