Scope and Contents From the Collection: This decree, issued by the Ministry of War and Navy of the Central Mexican Republic under President Antonio López de Santa Anna, was to protect the Santa Fe and Taos trade in the New Mexico territory. The decree is signed by José María de Tornel y Mendívil, the Minister of War during this time. The Santa Fe Trail was a vital trade route from approximately 1821, when Mexico gained independence from Spain, until 1880 when the railroad arrived.
