Biographical / Historical

The Guild of Professional Writers for Children was founded at the University of Alabama on 11 January 1978. The original purpose of the guild was to provide an interdisciplinary forum for University of Alabama faculty members who were interested in writing literature for children. In 1979, a formal statement of purpose and rules for membership were adopted. This document established that the guild is an association of people engaged in writing materials intended to be published for children to read. The goal of the group is to provide support, criticism, and polishing of member’s writing and illustrating skills, as well as sharing information on publishing. The requirement of membership is commitment on the professional level to writing for children. The guild remains active at the university to the present date.
