Scope and Contents

The bulk of this collection consists of newspaper and magazine clippings on character and discipline, education, psychology, and historical events from 1907-1957, including Sgt. Alvin C. York, the first nonstop flight over the Atlantic Ocean, Belgium, and comic strips on World War I. Most of the clippings are from the Birmingham News, but there are also clippings from the Montgomery Advertiser and the Meridian (Mississippi) Dispatch.

In addition to the clippings, the collection contains school plays and programs on history and character and some of Eppes’ college class notes and papers.

Series Descriptions: Teaching Materials: This series includes teaching materials Eppes used in her elementary school history classes. There are clippings on character and discipline, education, history, and psychology, 1907-1957; school plays and programs; children’s songs; auditorium information and miscellaneous materials. College Materials: This series includes notes and papers from history and psychology classes. World War One: This series includes clippings about World War I, specifically on Belgium, the first nonstop flight over the Atlantic Ocean, and Sgt. Alvin C. York.

Biographical / Historical

Janie May Eppes taught history at the Birmingham Public School in Birmingham, Alabama, from the late 1930s through the 1950s. She attended classes at Howard College, now Samford University, and Birmingham Southern College in Birmingham.
