Scope and Contents

The collection is 36 5x8” photographs of Charles Betts “C. B.” Waite’s work through urban and rural Mexico during 1904. Scenes depicted are of local laborers, street views including architecture and vendors, Mexican cities, and agricultural scenes. One photograph is of the catacombs of Guanajuato. A few photographs are captioned in Spanish on the print.

Blind-embossed leather photographic album tied with string. Some tears and rips on individual sleeves, small chip to one image, some fading to other images. Handle with care.

Biographical / Historical

Charles Betts “C. B.” Waite (1861-1927) was an American photographer born in Ohio who moved to California in 1881 to establish a photography studio in Los Angeles. Waite's work featuring Southern California landscapes and ranches gained notoriety as he established himself as a talented photographer.

In 1897 Waite traveled to Mexico City, Mexico, to establish a photography studio and began work with then President of Mexico Porifirio Díaz to photograph many Mexican government officials. Waite spent a lot of time traveling throughout Mexico, exploring rural and urban areas. Through contracts with Mexican travel agencies and news outlets, Waite’s work was featured across the country in travel magazines, newspapers, and various formats.
