Scope and Contents

This collection contains 646 pamphlets, newspaper clippings, and handwritten notes, instructions and essays Carolyn Shepherd Price collected and used as teaching aids in her home economics classes. They cover a broad range of topics including child development, clothing, health and home management and decoration. The collection also includes a typed term paper on eggs which she wrote for her University of Alabama Home Economics 15 class in 1935 and a handwritten essay on the costume of the American Colonial dame. The essay also includes sketches of dresses and dress designs. There are also popular recipes of the 1930s and 1940s, many just clipped out of newspapers and magazines.

Biographical / Historical

Carolyn Shepherd Price was born Carolyn Elizabeth Shepherd on September 16, 1915, the second of five children (oldest daughter) to Parker and Lula Mae Shepherd of Northport, Tuscaloosa County, Alabama. She attended the University of Alabama in the mid 1930s and took courses in Home Economics. In the late 1930s or early 1940s she married. She taught home economics in Alabama at least in the 1930s and 1940s. She died on December 13, 2002 in Montgomery, Montgomery County, Alabama.
