 File — Box: 15, Folder: 35

Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

A small collection of thirty-two items spanning the years from 1833 to 1870. The bulk of the materials in this collection are letters written to Boling's wife Mary Ann Saffold Boling, 1852-65. The letters written in the 1850s to Mrs. Boling are from various members of her family. Many of them relate to James M. Boling or to his estate. The letters written to her in the 1860s from her son offer insight into student life at the University of Alabama and the University of Virginia. One of these letters is almost illegible. The earliest dated piece is an 1833 tuition receipt from the University of Georgia for James M. Boling. The latest dated piece is an 1870 letter addressed to James M. Boling's daughter Bessie. Although the majority of the materials in this collection belong to James M. Boling or to his wife and are easily identified, two letters remain unidentified. At present, the relationship of the writers of these two letters to James M. Boling is unclear. Arrangement is either alphabetical or chronological, depending on content.
