The Robert E. Lee Klan Number One operated out of 1809 1/2 Fourth Avenue North from 1924-1931. ACME Newspictures, Inc. took this photograph in 1937. The caption on the back of the image reads: The home of the Robert E. Klan of the Ku Klux Klan, to which former senator Hugo Black is said to have belonged in Birmingham, Ala., several years ago. Mr. Black has neither confirmed nor denies reports as to his membership, although a bitter controversy rages in some quarters as to the truth of the statement
