Biographical / Historical
A native of Eufaula, Alabama, A. S. "Steve" Williams III graduated from The University of Alabama in 1958 with a bachelor of science degree in finance. While attending UA, he was a member of Phil Delta Theta social fraternity. He also earned a bachelor of laws degree from the Birmingham School of Law in 1964. Mr. Williams began his banking career with First National Bank of Birmingham in 1959 and joined Protective Life Corporation in 1964. He remained for more than 30 years and retired in 2001 as executive vice president and treasurer. A trip to Williamsburg, Va., in the early 1960s sparked his passion for collecting. With a growing interest in the founding fathers and the roots of our nation, Mr. Williams proceeded to create one of the greatest individual collections of American and Southern history ever assembled, and the collection represents a lifetime of avid collecting. Mr. Williams presented this collection, originally housed in Eufaula, to The University of Alabama in 2010. A generous community supporter, Mr. Williams has been active with many local organizations, including the Alabama Symphony association, the Vulcan District Boy Scouts of America, the Emmet O’Neal Library, the Birmingham Kiwanis Club and the Birmingham Historical Society. Mr. Williams and his wife, Rosemary Hoover Williams, live in Birmingham. They have three children and five grandchildren.
