Biographical / Historical
Duncan MacQueen (later "McQueen") left his little hamlet of Achnahannet in the Scottish highlands in the early 1800s for a life in America. He first settled in Caledonia, New York (notable because Caledonia is the name the Romans gave the land currently known as Scotland) but later relocated to Barton, Wisconsin. Letters he received from his brother James MacQueen shed light on the lives of those still in Scotland before and after the Highland Potato Famine (1846-1852).
