Letters to Clara Gray, 1898
Scope and Contents
This file contains two letters from James B. Hebden and one letter from D. W. Gray, both of the 1st Regiment of Kentucky Volunteers, US Army, to Clara M. J. Gray, care of the Louisville and Nashville Railroad Freight Office, Louisville, Kentucky. Hebden's letters are dated August 6, 1898, and November 1, 1898. The first was written from Newport News, Virginia, as the unit was shipping out to Puerto Rico. The second was written at Camp Ponce, Puerto Rico, on YMCA stationery. The letter from D. W. Gray is dated August 20, 1898, from SS Alama, in Ponce Harbor, Puerto Rico, and deals with the unit's expected movements. Gray's letter enclosed a small, uncut deck of playing cards purchased locally.
