 Item — Box: W0024.01

Scope and Contents

From the Collection: This scrapbook includes newspaper clippings, illustrations of early fire engines, and handwritten notes related to the history of the volunteer firefighter companies in Mobile in the early part of the nineteenth century. Although many of the articles in the notebook are dated 1867, some articles from 1830 to 1924 are included. The scrapbook was compiled by Daniel Geary, an organizer of the Franklin No. 3 Fire Company. Particular items of interest include a copy of the Constitution and Bylaws and a membership card from the Creole Steam Fire Company, one of the city's first fire companies. Handwritten notes list the names of company leaders. Newspaper clippings include information on company meetings, anniversary celebrations, and fire engine purchases.
