Envelopes and document fragments
Scope and Contents
The collection contains newspapers and magazines from about 1915 through 1954. Some of the papers include the Birmingham News for December 8, 1941 (headline: U.S. DECLARES WAR ON JAPAN); the Birmingham Age-Herald (Rotogravure Section for February 20, 1916 which includes a picture of the Russian Imperial family at Tsarkoe Selo); and the Centreville Press (various issues). The magazines include a copy of Cosmopolitan for August 1921, Literary Digest (several), and a Sears Roebuck & Co. catalog from about 1915. There are also many pictures cut from magazines, most of which are in full color and are from the Ladies Home Journal, Literary Digest, and Saturday Evening Post.
The collection also includes three photographs: one of a young girl sitting in a large chair (from the J.E. Yeager studios in Montevallo, Ala., in the 1920s probably); one of the Nettie Quill, a sternwheeler paddleboat; and one of two small boys looking up at two Montgomery police officers (probably from the 1950s or 1960s). There is also a folder of article fragments, miscellaneous scraps of paper, empty envelopes (most addressed to T.J. Smitherman in Centreville, Ala.), and stamps.
