Scope and Contents
The collection contains Mathew Winston's papers, grant proposals, program guides, brochures, postcards, photographs and other materials from 1984 to 1986 concerning the Alabama Shakespeare Festival, origianlly based in Anniston, Alabama and moved to Montgomery, Alabama in 1985.
The collection includes a grant proposal to the Committee for the Humanities in Alabama for developing and implementing the Alabama Shakespeare Festival: Theatre in the Mind project, a public humanities program linked to the 1985-1986 ASF productions. It also contains an instructor's guide to "First Stage: Launching into Drama" (includes poster and 6 student activity sheets for the 6 plays - "Pygmalion," "The School for Scandal," "Death of a Salesman," "A Midsummer Night's Dream," "The Glass Menagerie" and "The Merry Wives of Windsor").
There are also several magazine style season program guides, including those for "Alabama Shakespeare Festival: The State Theatre" 1984 edition (96 pages), "Theatre in the Mind" featuring articles about the 1985-86 season (3 copies), and "Shakespeare: The Theatre in the Mind" featuring articles about the 1984-1985 season, including the article "Macbeth: The Deed's Creature" by Mathew Winston. The double periodical "Festival: The Official Program Magazine of the Alabama Shakespeare Festival," June 1986 (16 pages) and "Horizon: The Magazine of the Arts," June 1986, v. 29, no. 5 (48 pages) is also included.
Also in the collection are miscellaneous brochures, newspaper clippings and photographs.
