Scope and Contents

From the Collection: This collection is made up of a single ledger used for accounts kept by George Walter Jones (a.k.a. "GW") as well as poetry and speeches presumably written by him in the later part of the nineteenth-century.

The front of the ledger is labeled "Cash Account with Confederate States, Maj. G.W. Jones, HQM CSA". George Washington Jones, at the rank of Captain, served as Assistant Quartermaster (AQM) in the 4th Alabama Infantry. His later service included Quartermaster to William Henry Chase Whiting and John Bell Hood with the rank of Major. However, the Major died in 1867 and the earliest entry in the ledger is 1879, so this ledger was most likely used by his son, George Walter Jones (1866-1946).
