Letters written by Alice Garnett and her husband Algernon Sydney Garnett, a professor at the University of Alabama, discussing, among other things, the hardships of travel, news of the university, its professors, and their wives, the election of a new superintendent of education, and a rebellion by the University Cadets against the commandant.

The record group contains many early extant records of The University of Alabama and includes materials documenting a wide range of functions, persons, and aspects of the University.

Letter dated 1 September 1864 appointing S. W. Eddins of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, to the University of Alabama's Alabama Corps of Cadets.

Correspondence, as well as photocopy and typescript copies of a booklet by Gilmer, containing the last roll and brief history of "Shockley's Independent Escort Company of Alabama Cavalry," a Civil War unit formed by University of Alabama students Branscom Shockley and Henry Burt in March 1864.

Copies of official papers, including correspondence, speeches, and miscellaneous materials, including approximately thirty items concerning the University of Alabama and the Alabama Corps of Cadets during the Civil War.

Contains the note books of his work as an engineer in Nashville, Tennessee, two books on engineering, photo cards from the Sigma Nu fraternity in Indianapolis, Indiana, and an invitation to the University of Alabama, Alabama Corps of Cadets on July 5, 1876.

A miscellany of material relating to the University of Alabama Corps of cadets, 1873-1905, including invitations to the 1873 junior exhibition and Corps of Cadets hops (dances) in 1874, 1876, and 1878, and the program for a 1905 reunion of the Corps of Cadets Company E, winner of a 1885 drill competition at the New Orleans Exposition.
