Barnard, University of Alabama professor of Chemistry, Philosophy, and Astronomy. Of interest are photographs of a vertical lift bridge possibly spanning the Warrior River in Tuscaloosa County.

This collection contains letters to and from Illinois soldier Charles B. Safford, who served as a captain in the United States Colored Troops during the Civil War, and his wife Clara Safford. Many of the letters date from the time of her second marriage to Thomas S. Brooke.

William Nazareth Mitchell Letters
Typescript and illustrations for the book, "Civil War Letters of William Nazareth Mitchell," edited by his grandson, William C. Etherton. The letters were written to Mitchell's wife, Rachel Caroline Mitchell, while he was serving in Missouri, Tennessee, Mississippi, and north Alabama. The original letters are at the University of Illinois, Carbondale.
