Scope and Contents This file contains letters primarily to the members of the W. B. Matthews family. One letter written in 1904, from W. E. B. Du Bois, is a letter of recommendation on behalf of Mr. W. B. Matthews, recommending Matthews for any position in a public school system. Du Bois writes of his seven-year acquaintance with Matthews and his family and speaks very highly of Matthews, both personally and professionally. Joseph Daugherty Receipts, 1847-1858

Scope and Contents This file contains eleven receipts issued between 1847 and 1858 to a free black man named Joseph Daugherty, from a variety of merchants and individuals, for buying, selling, or leasing items ranging from cotton and corn to pasturage to a coffee pot. None of the receipts provides any indication of where Daugherty lived. They do however, reveal that he was illiterate, signing an "X" beside his name, and that many of the individuals with whom he did business were barely literate.

Scope and Contents This file contains two newspaper articles relative to Autherine Lucy's enrollment at The University of Alabama in 1956. One, from a German newspaper, is annotated "Heidelberg, February 1956." The other is an Associated Press story, annotated "C-J (presumably the Louisville Courier-Journal), 9 May 1992," and relates to the establishment of an endowed scholarship at The University of Alabama in her name.
