Scope and Contents Four copies of The Chicago Defender, a newspaper founded in 1905 and aimed at the African American community. They include pages of cartoons, with one cartoon skewering a racist Southern character named "Mr. Jim Crow." The copies are from the weeks of November 27, and December 4, 11, and 25, 1948.
