This collection contains published and unpublished monographs, off-prints, maps, slides, illustrations, and ephemera relating to Hernando de Soto, his expedition of 1540, and the effects of Spanish exploration and colonization in Alabama and the Southeastern United States. From the Collection:
The collection contains the credentials of James W. Keating's appointment by Secretary of State, John Hay, as Consular Agent to Port aux Basques, Newfoundland, in 1902. Of interesting note is the fact that the document states that "James W. Keating, a British subject has been appointed Consular Agent of the United States at Port aux Basques, Newfoundland."
