Scope and Contents

This collection consists of letters written by and to Edwin Hardy Foster of Tuscaloosa, Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, between 1907 and 1938. There is also some miscellaneous correspondence written by Foster’s family members as well as correspondence with members of the United States House of Representatives concerning Foster’s application to the Consular Services. There is also a small collection of letters written in German.

The collection also has Foster’s report cards from Male High School in Tuscaloosa, Alabama from 1875 to 1881 and his first semester grades from The University of Alabama in 1882. There are also reports cards for his younger brother, Clement C. Foster, from 1884 to 1885; his next oldest brother, Henry B., from 1875 to 1882; his brother, Joshua H., from 1875 to 1881; his oldest brother, Sumner B., from 1872 to 1876; and his middle brother, Thomas J., from 1872 to 1878.

There are photographs (only three of the nineteen are labeled), financial statements, tax receipts and insurance policies, and miscellaneous class rolls and other papers.

Biographical / Historical

Edwin Hardy Foster was born on 14 June 1866, the eighth child of Joshua Hill and Cornelia Bacon Foster of Tuscaloosa, Tuscaloosa County, Alabama. He received his A.M. from the University of Alabama in 1886 where he taught German and English from 1902 until the early 1940s. Before returning to UA, he was a Professor of English at Howard College (now Samford University) from 1897 to 1903. He married Margaret Chunn of Washington, D.C. in July 1896; they had two sons, Julian B. and Joshua H. Foster.

Overview

Letters written by and to Foster between 1907 and 1938, as well as some miscellaneous correspondence written by Foster’s family members and members of the United States House of Representatives concerning his application to the Consular Services.
