Scope and Contents

The collection consists of over three hundred pieces of correspondence and various financial documents, such as contracts and receipts. The collection spans the years 1808-1968, with the majority falling between the 1820s and the 1930s. Major correspondents include members of the Chandler, Johnson, Kennedy, and Power families. There are also two letters to and from (one each) Landon C. Garland, an early president of the University of Alabama.

Biographical / Historical

John Calvin Faulkner was born in 1919 and was educated in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, public schools, where he finished high school at the age of 16. He attended the University of Alabama and served in the Navy during World War II. Upon returning to Tuscaloosa in 1946, he opened the first of his many businesses.

In 1972, Faulkner began buying up real estate, especially shopping centers, and was responsible for the renovation of several apartment complexes and shopping centers. He also played an active role in such organizations as the Tuscaloosa Preservation Society and the Boy Scouts.

Faulkner was well-travelled, visiting some 30 countries in South America, the Orient, and the Near East. He was married to Bonnie Farris Faulkner.
