Scope and Contents note

This collection consists of various documents, including speeches, correspondence, reports, faculty newsletters, alumni magazines, newspapers and newspaper clippings. There is a letter dated May 31, 1963, from Frank A. Rose, then the President of The University of Alabama, to all faculty and staff regarding parking on campus during the efforts to follow the court orders to desegregate. There is also a full page pictorial essay from the Meridian, Mississippi Star, Saturday, March 28, 1959, on the rise and decline of Gainesville, Alabama. The collection also has several tribute and dedication programs, honoring Julia Tutwiler, Agnes Ellen Harris, Marten Ten Hoor, John M. Gallalee, the inauguration of Frank Anthony Rose as President and the dedications of the Amelia Gayle Gorgas Library, the Walter Bryan Jones Hall, and the Mary Burke and Martha Parham residence halls for women.

Biographical/Historical note

Wade Hampton Coleman, Jr., was born on June 10, 1904, the oldest child of the children of Wade H. and Lillian Coleman of Livingston, Sumter County, Alabama. After completing his education at The University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Tuscaloosa County, Alabama in 1937, he taught in the University’s College of Arts & Sciences for over 25 years as a professor of Romance Languages. He died in May 1973.
