Scope and Contents

This collection contains seventy-one color slides taken by Marjorie L. Smith in and around Hayneville, Lowndes County, Alabama. Slides depict various stages of cotton production, from picking the cotton by hand to processing in the cotton gin and getting the cotton bales ready for the market. The collection also contains images of African Americans working in the field and images of an African American church in Hayneville. Some show the growth stages of a cotton plant, from seeds to matured cotton.

Biographical / Historical

Marjorie L. Smith was born in Montgomery, Alabama August 5, 1911. She graduated from Wellesley College and studied architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She was involved in the Montgomery Bus Boycott. She was married to Moreland Smith. In 1960 she set out to document the changes in cotton agriculture. She worked on this project through 1965, when she moved to Atlanta, where she resided until her death on December 12, 2004.
