Biographical / Historical

Big Creek Baptist Church, Coker, Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, was constituted as a church on July 22, 1820, by Daniel Brown and Thomas Baines. Phillip May was the first pastor (1820-1823), followed by R. Portwood (1823-1824), Thomas Baines (1824-1826), and Mede White (1826-1835).

As the third oldest church in Tuscaloosa County, it was one of the thirteen churches organizing the Tuscaloosa Baptist Association in 1834. Prior to 1864 church records show 148 slaves as members. Located first next to Bluff Branch School, next to Big Creek Cemetery, the church moved to its present location on Romulus Road in Coker in 1944. The name was changed to Coker Baptist Church in 1956.
