Biographical / Historical

William Dougherty (1841-1923) was a member of the 4th Kentucky Infantry. The 4th Kentucky Infantry was part of the Orphan Brigade, belonging to the First Kentucky Brigade in the Confederate forces during the American Civil War. The Orphan Brigade was the largest of the Confederate Kentucky brigades, comprised of the 2nd-6th and 9th Infantry Regiments. The correspondence is between William and his future wife Eliza Anderson (1845-1920), of Elm Grove, Mississippi. Both William Dougherty and his wife came from Glasgow, Kentucky, although Eliza's family moved away to northern Mississippi, particularly the Coldwater area of DeSoto County, and during the Civil War, Eliza went to school in Senatobia. Eliza sometimes wrote to Dougherty as "Cousin Willie," suggesting that their families were interrelated. On December 22, 1866, Dougherty and Eliza got married and he eventually moved to Coldwater, Mississippi. They had several children and engaged first in farming and then in running a general store.
