Scope and Contents
This collection contains materials created and received by members of the Farr family of Georgia and Alabama. Letters from two sons during the Civil War make up the bulk of the collection. The collection also includes materials relating to Martha Farr and her education that provide information about female education in the South. Other materials include family letters, one of which was written by Roxie Farr to her sister, Martha, and describes their mother's recent weeks-long smallpox illness.
The Farr brothers wrote letters that discuss these Civil War campaigns and battles: Second Battle of Bull Run, Battle of Antietam, Battle of Fredericksburg, Battle of Gettysburg, Battle of Chickamauga, Battle of Fort Sanders, Battle of the Wilderness, and the Battle of the Crater.
The collection includes fourteen photographs, including an ambrotype is in its original, but damaged, case. Most are unidentified portraits. Those with identifications are Hart family members.
One folder includes family history materials about the Farr, Armstrong, and Hart families. Most of this material was solicited and gathered by Lorene Farr O'Neal, who was the daughter of B. F. Farr and Sarah Elizabeth Hart. This folder includes a small, hand-made book created by an Armstrong family member in 1823.
The last folder in the collection includes copies of biographical and descriptive information that a vendor included; these have not been checked for accuracy.

Biographical / Historical
The Farr family lived in Georgia and Alabama. Tilman Farr (1809-1888) married Mary Armstrong (1811-1890) in 1833. They had at least eight children: Amanda Frances Farr Averett (1834-1922); Christopher Columbus “C. C.” Farr (1836 or 1843-1864); Roxanna Farr Slayton (1837-1921); Uriah Harris Farr (1839-1864); John Henry Clay Farr (1842-1913); Martha "Mattie" or "Matt" Catherine Farr Flanigan (1844-1935); James Alexander Farr (1847-1918); and Benjamin Franklin "B. F." Farr (1849-1931).
Three Farr brothers joined the Confederate Army, all mustering into Company G, 20th Georgia Infantry: C. C., Uriah, and John Henry. Uriah was killed in battle in 1864, and C. C. died after being released from prison in Elmira, New York, in 1864.

Processing Information
Most of the Civil War letters arrived at the archives in the state an original vendor had arranged them: folded and placed into envelopes, then sorted into alphabetical order. These envelopes were numbered from 1 to 69 and each envelope had the letter's date. Some envelopes included additional descriptive information. The collection also included a typed and usually very brief description of each letter. The archivist removed these from the envelopes, unfolded them, and sorted them by creator.
The rest of the collection was sorted by creator or recipient. Martha "Matt" Farr created, received, and seems to have gathered most of the materials. Later materials, particularly the family histories, were gathered and created by Lorene Farr O'Neal.
