Biographical / Historical

Franklin Beck, the subject of this paper, was born in North Carolina, but grew up in Wilcox County, Alabama. He attended (but did not graduate from) the University of Alabama, later attending Georgetown University and Yale Law School. He was licensed to practice law in 1841, becoming a circuit court judge in 1843. In 1853 he was elected to the Alabama Legislature in 1853, and to the Alabama Secession Convention in 1861. Afterwards, he was elected Colonel of the 23rd Alabama Infantry Regiment. He served throughout the Civil War until he was killed in Tennessee.
