Biographical / Historical

José Rafael Carrera y Turcios (1814-1865) was a Guatemalan politician who was active during the first thirty years of Guatemala's independence. Born toward the end of Spanish colonization , Carrera joined the Guatemalan army in the late 1820s during the civil war and left the army in 1835. Carrera served a first term as President from 1844-1848 until he was exiled to Mexico for a little over a year. In 1854, Carrera was declared President for Life by Juan José de Aycinena y Piñol and served in that role until his death in 1865. Carrera's career saw many political and social changes, including the Mayan uprisings, civil wars in neighboring and nearby nations, attempts to overthrow the Catholic Church, and battles fought between Central American nations and their colonizers.

William Walker (1824-1860) was an American politician who authorized unofficial military expeditions to Mexico and Central America because of his strong belief in manifest destiny. In 1854, Walker became allied with the Nicaraguan Democratic Party fighting Legitimist Party forces during the country’s civil war, ordering attacks on factions in exchange for the promise of private colonies for Walker. His involvement concerned neighboring Central American countries for fear of escalation cross borders, and they eventually fought Walker's private army. In 1857, Walker surrendered to the United States Navy, which was under pressure from Costa Rican forces as they had grown their numbers with other Central American armies. Walker returned to the United States and three years later traveled back to Central America. The British Royal Navy intercepted Walker and turned him over to Honduran authorities. Walker was executed by firing squad in September 1860.
