Biographical / Historical
Daniel K. Ludwig was an American businessman who established a freight business in the Great Lakes region of the United States and later developed construction finance planning projects. Ludwig had diverse business interests including oil refining, banking, cattle ranching, and real estate. At the peak of Ludwig’s professional ventures more than 200 companies in 50 countries were under Ludwig’s control, amassing a wealth of an estimated $4.5 billion.
During the 1960s Ludwig began a new business venture in Brazil called the Jari Project. Ludwig bought 4 million acres of land in northeast Brazil. The intention was to construct a pulp paper factory to accommodate the paper shortage Ludwig projected. The site also included a railroad, roadways for transporting product, and a cattle ranch and rice fields to accommodate the 30,000 workers living in settlements on site. With Ludwig citing health reasons and troubles with local government, the project was sold to Brazilian investors in the early 1980s.
