Biographical / Historical
The Mogiana Railway Company was privately founded in 1872 as a means of connecting the coastal ports with the Mogiana Coffee plantations in the state of Sao Paulo, Brazil. The rail company had their headquarters and workshop in Campinas, where they built their own steam locomotives, passenger and freight cars, and spare parts. By the 1920s Mogiana Railways had developed a network of nearly 2000 kilometers of rail lines connecting about 150 stations throughout the state. These lines would eventually spread into the Minas Gerais state to the north.
Because of financial difficulties in 1971, Mogiana Railways was incorporated into the state owned Ferrocarril del Pacifico S.A. (FEPASA) rail services system. FEPASA reconstructed and electrified much of the former Mogiana railways which concluded with a route of straighter rail systems further out from major cities for the purpose of freight hauling. The last passenger trains ran on the former Mogiana rails in 1997.
