Biographical / Historical
Established in 1850, the Order of the Eastern Star created a space for men and women to participate in Masonic traditions together, as traditional Freemasonry only accepts male participants. The idea for such an order came from Dr. Rob Morris and his wife, Charlotte. The pair designed the foundation of the Order, using biblical heroines to establish lessons and values. In 1867, Robert Macoy took over the organizational planning and published a ritual for the Order. The first Grand Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star was established in 1867.
