Biographical / Historical

John William Abercrombie was born in St. Clair County, Alabama, on May 17, 1866. He graduated from Oxford College, in Oxford, Alabama, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1886,and from The University of Alabama with a law degree in 1888.

Abercrombie pursued a career in education and politics. He held various administrative positions in small colleges and public schools in Alabama and Georgia. He was active in state and local Democratic Party politics. In 1898 he was elected State Superintendent of Education for Alabama and served until 1902 when he was named president of The University of Alabama. He served as president until 1911. Afterward, he was elected to two terms in the United States Congress and then served as Acting Secretary of the United States Department of Labor. From 1920-1927 he served once again as State Superintendent of Education.

John Abercrombie married Rosa Merrill in 1891 and the couple had four children. He died in Montgomery, Alabama, on July 2, 1940.
