Biographical / Historical

The Tuskegee V.A. Hospital was opened in 1923 with the purpose of providing care to over 300,000 African-American veterans after World War I. Congress authorized its construction at the Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute, and the facility is still in use today. When it was built, the hospital consisted of twenty seven new buildings and 464 acres of land. The hospital was a place where African Americans could not only receive proper medical care, but were also allowed to practice medicine during times of segregation.
