This collection contains a battalion log and a newspaper. Sgt. Harold L. Bank kept this unit journal from 15 July 1944, until 10 October 1945, from Mindanao, Philippine Islands. It is the Battalion log of the 3rd Battalion, 167th Infantry, 31st Infantry Division. The division was located in the vicinity of Mafin Bay, Dutch New Guinea, along the southeast bank of the Worske River, and then moved to Morotai Island. On 25 December 1944, the 2nd Lieutenant of the 167th Infantry, James D. Spencer, wrote an additional note concerning a night attack. The 31st Division returned to the states in November 1945, and all who desired were discharged.
This newspaper is the front portion of the Chicago Daily Tribune, from Tuesday, 8 May 1945. The headline reads “V. E. Day – Today”.

This Tuscaloosa native was a Battalion Sergeant Major with the 3rd Battalion, 167th Infantry, 31st Infantry Division in Mindanao, Philippines from 1944-1945, during World War II. On 22 December 1945, he was discharged at Camp Beale, California.
