Southern Trade and Diplomacy Collection
Scope and Contents
The collection consists of one letter and two pamphlets related to trade and diplomacy in the antebellum South. Items include reports of two of three commercial conventions held in Augusta, Georgia, where attendants sought to develop regional economic cooperation to free themselves from economic dependence on the North or Europe. The other item is a letter written by southern leader Howell Cobb to Belgian engineer Eugene Le Hardy regarding the Southern Direct Trade Movement.
