Biographical / Historical

Bill Leapard (1918-1996), a Tuscaloosa native, met Doris Hurst Leapard (1919-2008), a New Jersey native who spent most of her childhood in New York, at the height of World War II, and they married in 1945. Shortly after their marriage, the couple moved back to Bill's hometown of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, where they became involved with the Tuscaloosa arts community. The Leapards maintained a lifelong friendship with Nelle Harper Lee, evidenced through Lee's willingness to provide a blurb for Doris's memoir, Almost Integrated (1998).
