The collection contains five documents relating to James Collier Foster, including: his license to practice law in Mississippi in 1842; his election as captain of the Rural Guards in Tuscaloosa in 1861; his Warrant of Pardon signed by President Andrew Johnson on September 12, 1865; his acknowledgement of the President's Warrant; and the certification of a true copy of the Warrant on file in the State Department.

Biographical / Historical
James Collier Foster, son of Hardy Foster, was born on May 12, 1817, probably in South Carolina. He married Jane Elizabeth Ware on May 31, 1842, in Montgomery, Alabama. The couple had four children: Frank; Guy; Hal Lovelace; and Hugh. He died in Tuscaloosa on July 29, 1904.
