Charles Robinson papers

 Collection
Identifier: W-0161

Scope and Contents

This collection of letters and documents follow Lieutenant Charles Robinson's request for a commission in one of the African American units of the United States Army during the later years of the Civil War. In his letter of September 13, 1864, he states that he is "now in the 100 days service" and stationed in Cairo, Illinois. Included also is a letter of recommendation from First Lieutenant David T. N. Landerson stating that Robinson is "probably the best drilled officer in he Regiment."

There are three other documents all dealing with Robinson's appointment to a colored regiment, including his formal appointment as captain in the Eighth Regiment printed on vellum. There is also a carte-de-visite of Charles Robinson which has been trimmed to fit in an album.
