Biographical / Historical
Edward S. Vernon, son of Samuel Milton and Elizabeth Spry Vernon, was born in Zanesville, Muskingum County, Ohio, on November 13, 1842. He enlisted in the U. S. Army in the Seventy-eighth Ohio Veteran Volunteer Infantry on December 18, 1861, as a private. He was appointed corporal on March 1, 1863, and Sergeant on July 23, 1864. He served his entire military career in Co. F. He was discharged at Louisville, Kentucky, on July 11, 1865.
In 1866, he married Martha Stiers; they had five children: Samuel W.; Francis W.; Newton L.; Clara M.; and Edward T.
Vernon died in Corning, Nemaha County, Kansas, on December 10, 1926.
