Biographical / Historical
The Atlanta and West Point Railroad Company (AWP) was chartered in Georgia in 1847 as the Atlanta and LaGrange Rail Road and renamed in 1857. The AWP along with the Western Railway of Alabama and their parent company Georgia Railroad operated as the West Point Route. Through multiple mergers and stock control changes, the group eventually was renamed Seaboard System Railroad (SBD). In 1986 SBD merged with Chessie System to form CSX Transportation.
