This prospectus for Nott's and Gliddon's forthcoming book, Types of Mankind: or, ethnological researches, which was published in 1854, depicts a few of the "above two hundred wood cuts" and lists the chapter titles for the first section of the book.

Biographical / Historical
Josiah Clark Nott, the son of Federalist politician and judge Abraham Nott, was born on March 31, 1804, in South Carolina. He received his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1827 and completed his training in Paris, France. When he returned to the United States he moved to Mobile, Alabama, in 1833 and began his surgical practice there. Following the line of thought that the mosquito was a vector for malaria, Nott is credited as being the first to apply the insect vector theory to yellow fever, then a very serious health issue in the South.
Nott was a founder of the Medical College of Alabama, established in Mobile in 1858, and served as its Professor of Surgery. In 1860 he successfully appealed to the state legislature for a monetary appropriation and a state charter for the school. During the American Civil War he served as a Confederate surgeon, staff officer, and hospital inspector. Nott died on his seventy-ninth birthday, March 31, 1873, and was interred in Magnolia Cemetery in Mobile.

George Robins Gliddon was born in Devonshire, England, in 1809. At a very young age, he traveled with his father, a merchant and United States consul at Alexandria, to Egypt. Those travels generated a life-long interest in Egyptian antiques and Egyptology. Gliddon was a popular lecturer in the United States where he succeeded in attracting attention to the subject of Egyptology. He died on November 16, 1857, in Panama.
