Scope and Contents
This commonplace book, compiled by Tennessee resident Lavinia Hetherling Leinau, contains literary quotations, poems, and handwritten notes from friends. The notebook is embossed with Leinau's name and contains several printed engravings. Leinau began compiling the commonplace book in 1831, when she was a young woman living in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. The majority of entries are dated from 1831 to 1836; the book contains one entry dated 1879, added after Leinau's death. The majority of entries are notes and poems written by friends and dedicated to Leinau, dealing with themes such as friendship, remembrance, and morality. The collection also includes handwritten copies of essays on the "character of a good wife" and "character of a good husband."

Biographical / Historical
The daughter of Daniel Leinau and Eliza Jardon, Lavinia Heatherling Leinau was born on October 9, 1817, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Leinau married Isaac Henry Hilliard on May 26, 1836, in Beersheba Springs, Tennessee. On April 15, 1837, the couple's only daughter, Lavinia Hilliard, was born. On August 11, 1837, Leinau died at the age of nineteen.
