Scope and Contents
Columbus L. Hadaway wrote this thirty-three page memoir in 1913. Hadaway's memoir describes his Civil War experiences beginning with his enlistment on August 10, 1861, and ending with the surrender of Confederate forces on April 26, 1865. At the age of sixteen, Hadaway enlisted as a private in Company C of the Fifty-fourth Alabama Infantry, a division popularly known as the Griffin Rifles. Hadaway was briefly transferred to the Twenty-second Alabama Infantry in 1862; in this division, he fought in the Battle of Shiloh and participated in the Kentucky campaign before returning to the Fifty-fourth Infantry. Hadaway's memoir describes these battles, as well as the Battle of Baker's Creek (also called the Battle of Champion Hill), the Battle of Resaca, and the Battle of Bentonville. In addition to descriptions of battle, Hadaway also discusses marching conditions and the army's lack of adequate supplies.
