Scope and Contents
This collection contains two minute books containing the minutes of directors' and stockholders' meetings of the Montgomery and West Point Railroad. The first ledger contains minutes from directors' meetings, beginning March 4, 1846, and ending with the final directors' meeting on August 1, 1870, when the sale of the company to the Western Railroad Company was finalized. The second ledger contains minutes from stockholders' meetings, beginning March 2, 1846, and ending with the minutes of the company's final stockholders' meeting on June 2, 1870, when they approved the sale of the railroad.

Biographical / Historical
The Montgomery and West Point Railroad company was chartered on January 20, 1832. The charter permitted the Montgomery Railroad to build a railway stretching from Montgomery, Alabama, to Columbus, Georgia. Another charter issued in 1834 changed the proposed final destination to West Point, Georgia. Financial troubles stalled railway construction, and the first twelve miles of track were not completed and opened until 1840. In 1851, the track to West Point was completed. In 1870, the company merged with the Western Railroad of Alabama.
