Scope and Contents

This collection includes ballots, voting lists, city council minutes, oaths of office, and correspondence related to elections in the town of Pickett Springs, located in Montgomery County. Although items range in date from 1888 to 1920, the bulk of the material is from 1903 - 1906. In addition to the city council documentation there is a map of the area and a photograph labeled "Pickett Springs Park." It is interesting to note that even as late as 1906, elected officials had to sign a "Duelling Oath," swearing that they had not and would not engage, aid, or abet in a challenge with deadly weapons while they were in office.

Biographical / Historical

In September 1886, the Montgomery Advertiser declared that Pickett Springs, Alabama, was the “best public resort.” Located four miles north of Montgomery, Alabama, the park offered entertainment and relaxation for citizens who traveled out by train until 1902 when street railway service started. Included in the park area were a dance pavilion, refreshment stand, bowling alley, shooting gallery, carousel, flying swing, billiard parlor, scenic car and roller coaster. During summer in the early twentieth century, the Salvation Army conducted fresh-air camps there for indigent people. By World War I, Pickett Springs had lost much of its aura as automobiles and movies offered their diversions.
